Two questions...

Are there any autism support groups that meet at night in the Plano/Allen/Mckinney area? Also, I just found out that my five-year old son, who has PDD-NOS needs glasses. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the best type would be or the best place to get them? He is not too fond of having anything on his face, especially near his eyes.  He amazingly did really well at the eye exam, though. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Kandice

Re: Two questions...

Hi, Kandice-

There is a group of moms (of kids with autism diagnoses') in the Lake Cities (South Denton) area who are meeting once in a while in the evenings.  The next get together for that one is Friday, Sept 18 at 8pm at the TX Land and Cattle in Hickory Creek (Jennifer Goldfield is coordinating this meeting).

I think that this Collin County group (ASCC) has meetings fairly often in the evening, but they are the programs meetings usually....although I would consider that a support group myself.  I don't get there much because of the distance.

I don't have any suggestions for you about the glasses, sorry.  Hopefully someone else on this forum will.

Re: Two questions...

ardassist-

Since the meeting is in a restaurant, can we bring our children? Or do most come alone? How can I get in contact with Jenifer Goldfield? Does she have e-mail? thanks for the suggestion

Re: Two questions...

One of the moms at the ABA therapy center in Plano where my son goes for speech therapy had mentioned something about a group in the area.  I'll check on it and get back to you.

My five year-old son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS last year.   He doesn't need glasses (thankfully), but one of the students who used to be in his class wore glasses.  His glasses had sort of a stretch band that went behind his head.  One other idea--what about contacts?  I know that may sound silly, but if you were to put them in and take them out for him, it might work.  Maybe the daily wear kind--in case he loses them.  :)

Re: Two questions...

Kandice -

I think Jennifer's rationale for having the later-in-the-evening dinner is that it allows times just for moms to visit (not the kiddos).   This allows us to speak freely and not have to worry about entertaining the little ones.  If you want to attend the ASCC daytime group with your child, that might be an option for you....I think that one is Wed this week (check this ASCC site for details).

If you will contact me offlist, I will give you the contact info for Jennifer.
